Treating expiry as “the site was deleted overnight” produces the wrong repair. People change nameservers, buy a new name and move mail. The status word in the registrar panel tells you which window you are in. That word does not carry the same calendar for every extension.
On an EuroVDC price row, grace and redemption days appear when that TLD has them. One memorised “30 days” does not have to be true for .com and a country code at the same time. The place to look is domain prices. Losing the brand itself is a different article. This one is the clock.
The status words
- Active: The name is yours and the renewal date is ahead. A working website does not replace this word. The zone can live on other nameservers.
- Grace: The term has ended and the registrar may still allow a normal renewal. The length is not the same for every TLD. If the price row has no days, that window is not there. Do not wait on a guess.
- Redemption: Normal renewal has closed. Getting the name back is a more expensive action. Days and fee are on the price row. “It will come back in a few days” is false for this word.
- Pending delete: The restore window is closing or has closed. Someone else can register it. A new nameserver does not turn this word into active.
Where to look first
- Status and end date in the registrar panel. Not the A record in the DNS panel.
- The payment method on the same account. Auto-renew with a declined card can move the name into grace.
- Grace and redemption days on the price table. A dash means that TLD does not have that window.
- If the name is still yours, renew it. If it is someone else’s, a new DNS record does not bring the brand back.
Do not confuse the nameserver
The zone can sit on ns1.eurovdc.eu while the invoice is at another registrar. Renewal happens where the invoice is cut. The nameserver only publishes the zone. When the term ends, the zone stops resolving. The fix is not to point the A record at another IP.
This page is the clock
Losing the brand when you forget renewal is a separate article. This page does not repeat that cost. The only job here is the word in the panel: active, grace, redemption, pending delete. Day counts sit on the price row. Changing nameservers before you read the word does not turn it into active.
Frequently asked questions
If the site still opens, has the term not ended?
No. Cache and some grace policies keep a site visible for a while. The word in the panel is the one that counts.
Does every extension have redemption?
No. Days and fee are on the price row. If the row is empty, do not describe a window that is not there.
Does the fee change during grace?
It depends on the TLD. A normal renewal fee and a redemption fee are not the same row. Read the table. Do not invent a multiplier.
Is the mailbox deleted too?
If the mailbox is a separate product, the disk can remain. If the name does not resolve, the address does not work. Read the status word first, then look at MX.
