What You Should Know About WHOIS

Short, citation-ready answers on transfer locks, privacy and TLD differences.

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

WHOIS is the classic plain-text protocol for domain registration data. RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is ICANN’s modern, structured, HTTPS-based successor. EuroVDC’s lookup tool presents public registration, expiry, registrar and nameserver fields from official registry sources in a readable summary.

What does a transfer lock (clientTransferProhibited) mean?

A transfer lock is a status code that blocks moving the domain to another registrar. While locked, an EPP/Auth-code transfer cannot start. Remove the lock in your current registrar panel first; if the domain shows as unlocked, you can proceed with EuroVDC Domain Transfer.

How do GDPR and WHOIS privacy affect results?

Under EU GDPR, many TLDs redact personal contact fields. In those cases EuroVDC only displays public technical data (dates, registrar, nameservers, status codes). Queries are not logged and no personal data is collected by this tool.

Why do .com, .eu, .de and .tr WHOIS records look different?

Each TLD has its own registry and privacy policy. .com/.net follow ICANN gTLD rules; .eu and .de apply regional/country policies; .tr follows TRABIS processes. Visible contact fields and status codes therefore vary by extension.
