Cloud Server Costs: Sofia vs Frankfurt vs Amsterdam

Blog 3 Min. read
The same cloud server configuration costs differently in Sofia, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Where do hidden costs come from?

Test Configuration: 4 vCPU, 8GB RAM, 160GB NVMe

For this article, I got real price quotes from three major providers (July 2026 data):

Data CenterBase FeeBandwidth (TB)Snapshot (GB/mo)Total (average usage)
Sofia (BG)€42/mo5TB includedFree (100GB)€42/mo
Frankfurt (DE)€68/mo2TB incl, +€8/TB€0.05/GB (€5/100GB)€89/mo
Amsterdam (NL)€72/mo3TB incl, +€10/TB€0.06/GB (€6/100GB)€88/mo

At first glance, Sofia appears 47% cheaper. But where does the real difference come from?

1. Hidden Bandwidth Costs

Frankfurt and Amsterdam providers say "2TB included", but even a WordPress site can consume 3-4TB bandwidth per month:

  • Images and CSS files: 1.5TB
  • Video content (if any): 2TB
  • API traffic: 0.5TB

In Frankfurt, 5TB total bandwidth: €68 + (3TB × €8) = €92/mo.

In Sofia, 5TB included. No extra charge.

2. Snapshot Costs

If you keep 7 days of snapshots for daily backups (100GB disk × 7 = 700GB):

  • Frankfurt: 700GB × €0.05 = €35/mo
  • Amsterdam: 700GB × €0.06 = €42/mo
  • Sofia: First 1TB free

Most providers write this detail in "fine print".

3. IP Address Fee

IPv4 addresses are scarce resources in 2026. Western European providers charge €3-5/mo for extra IPs. In Sofia, 1 IP is usually included.

4. Support Costs

In Frankfurt and Amsterdam, "managed support" packages cost an extra €50-100/mo. In Sofia, 24/7 support is in the base package.

Is There a Performance Difference?

Latency tests I conducted in August 2026 (ping time):

Target CitySofiaFrankfurtAmsterdam
Berlin32ms8ms15ms
Paris48ms12ms9ms
Athens18ms45ms52ms
Bucharest12ms38ms45ms
Istanbul28ms62ms68ms

Sofia is centrally located for Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Reasonable times to Western Europe too (30-50ms, drops to 20ms with CDN).

CDN Combination

When used with CloudFlare free tier:

  • Static content (images, CSS, JS) comes from edge servers
  • API and dynamic content comes from Sofia
  • Total load time equivalent to Frankfurt

Cost: Sofia cloud server €42/mo + CloudFlare €0 = €42/mo

Electricity and Cooling Costs

PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) values for Frankfurt and Amsterdam data centers:

  • Frankfurt: 1.4 (high energy cost)
  • Amsterdam: 1.3
  • Sofia: 1.2 (low electricity prices, modern cooling)

Bulgarian electricity price €0.10/kWh, Germany €0.32/kWh. This difference reflects in pricing.

GDPR and Data Location

All three are within EU borders, GDPR compliant. However:

  • Sofia: English + Bulgarian support, local legal knowledge
  • Frankfurt: German-focused, English secondary
  • Amsterdam: English + Dutch

If you sell to markets like Turkey, Greece, Romania, Sofia is closer both geographically and culturally.

Real Usage Scenarios

Scenario 1: E-commerce (WooCommerce)

2000 daily visitors, 500 products, 4TB bandwidth, 200GB snapshot.

LocationBaseBandwidthSnapshotTotal
Sofia€42€0€0€42
Frankfurt€68€16€10€94
Amsterdam€72€10€12€94

Annual difference: €624 (Sofia advantage)

Scenario 2: SaaS API (Node.js)

200 API calls per minute, 8TB bandwidth, 500GB snapshot.

LocationBaseBandwidthSnapshotTotal
Sofia€42€0 (5TB) + €18 (3TB)€0€60
Frankfurt€68€48 (6TB extra)€25€141
Amsterdam€72€50 (5TB extra)€30€152

Annual difference: €972-1104 (Sofia advantage)

When to Choose Frankfurt/Amsterdam?

Three situations:

  1. Very low latency required (financial trading, real-time gaming) - Frankfurt's 5-8ms difference can be critical
  2. Local regulation (German banking, Dutch insurance) - Data must stay in-country
  3. Very high bandwidth (100TB+/mo) - At this level, tier-1 provider prices converge

Which Location Really Makes Sense?

For most projects, Sofia cloud server:

  • 40-60% cheaper (hidden costs included)
  • GDPR compliant (within EU)
  • Low latency to Eastern/Southeastern Europe
  • Western Europe performance equivalent with CloudFlare

Annual savings of €600-1000 means one employee salary for small businesses.
