.com, .eu or a Country Code: Which Domain First

Blog 2 min read

The string customers type and the string on the contract are the decision. The extension does not buy a ranking.

Customers type a name. Contracts print a name. Those two strings are the decision. .com, .eu and a country code are all domain names, and they do not do the same job: the registry, who may register, and the spelling people remember are different.

At EuroVDC, names you can register today show up in domain search. The 2026 new gTLD round does not change that search. Reveal Day publishes applications. It does not put a new extension in the cart.

What to pick first

  • .com: The default when the contract, the foreign customer and the spoken brand already use it. No local trade-registry document is required for the name itself.
  • .eu: EURid checks an eligible presence. If the company has no such presence, the name will not complete. Do not buy it as a logo and discover the rule at checkout.
  • A country code: Use it when people in that country will type it. Eligibility is the registry’s rule, shown at registration, not a blog’s summary of every document.

Leave the SEO sentence aside

An extension does not buy a ranking. The useful name is the one customers already type. The wrong extension sends a correct page to an address nobody enters. If budget allows and both spellings are the same brand, hold both. That is a spelling decision, not an algorithm decision.

Three checks at registration

  1. Spelling: the legal name, the spoken brand and the common typo are often three strings. You do not have to buy all of them. The string on the invoice should be yours.
  2. Renewal: if the name drops, you lose the name people know, not merely a DNS record. Turn auto-renew on and watch the card separately.
  3. Mail: the address does not appear because the domain does. MX and SPF are a later step.

Frequently asked questions

Is .eu better than .com for a European company?

It is better only if customers type it and the registry accepts the registrant. A company that already prints .com on every contract does not become more European by abandoning that string.

Should I wait for the new gTLD list?

No. Those extensions are not for sale on 7 October 2026. The name you need this quarter is the one search shows as free today.

Does a country-code name rank higher locally?

Not by itself. Local language, local pages and the links people follow matter more than the letters after the dot.

Can I use one name for the site and another for mail?

Yes, and it confuses customers. If you do it, both names must be yours and the mail name must be the one printed on the invoice.
