.tr Domain Extensions – TAKIL and TAKAL: Critical Security Mechanisms
Domain Transactions 2 Min. read

Turkey’s domain name management system, TRABIS (TR Network Information System), was launched on September 14, 2022, introducing the era of document-free registrations. This innovation made it faster and more accessible to obtain .tr domain names (such as .com.tr, .net.tr, .org.tr, or directly .tr). However, not every domain can be freely registered. This is where the TAKIL and TAKAL lists come into play.

What is TAKIL? (Restricted Names List)

TAKIL covers domain names that can only be registered when certain documents or conditions are provided, and are restricted for general use. This mechanism was created to prevent users from being misled and to protect public order.

Domain names under TAKIL include:

  • Public institutions and financial terms: words such as “bank”, “insurance”, “ministry”.
  • City and district names: place names like ankara.com.tr, kadikoy.tr.
  • Historical and cultural values: public figures or cultural heritage.
  • Official abbreviations: expressions such as “T.C.”, “Turkish”.

Registration process: When applying for a domain name under TAKIL, TRABIS requires supporting documents such as a trademark registration certificate, business license, or official permission. If your documents are deemed appropriate, the domain name allocation is completed.

What is TAKAL? (Prohibited Names List)

TAKAL refers to domain names that cannot be registered under any circumstances and are completely banned. If an application is made for a domain name on this list, the system automatically rejects it.

Domain names under TAKAL include:

  • Expressions contrary to public order: content that threatens national security or is illegal.
  • General morality and health: obscene terms, expressions against social values, or those threatening health.
  • Misleading content: words carrying risks of fraud or malicious use.

Important Note: The TAKAL list is not publicly shared by BTK. It is only revealed through a system warning during a domain name application.

Why are TAKIL and TAKAL Important?

Thanks to these two mechanisms:

  • A secure internet environment is ensured; fake bank or government websites are blocked.
  • Unfair gain is prevented; speculative registrations using city names or popular brands are stopped.
  • Trademark rights are protected; potential confusion during the document-free registration period is minimized.

Conclusion:

When you want to register a .tr domain name and see the warning “This domain name is restricted for allocation,” you are most likely using a word included in the TAKIL list. In this case, you can apply with the necessary documents. However, if the domain name falls under TAKAL, there is no option other than choosing an alternative name.

You can safely search and instantly register your domain names not restricted by TAKIL and TAKAL through the domain query page of eurovdc.eu.
